11/11 Veterans Day Service & Lunch

Invitation to all from Denise McHugh, Memorial Chapel Manager -

On Friday, November 11, 2022 from noon to 1:00 pm, the University recognizes the contributions of our veterans community through a magnificent program of music and spoken word at the Memorial Chapel. MannerMusik and the Mighty Sound of Maryland provide a musical backdrop as remarks are offered by two veterans with strong ties to the UMD community.

Trained as a radio operator, Joseph Hartner was deployed overseas as a U.S. Marine supporting Operation Inherent Resolve and Operation Enduring Freedom.  Currently a senior majoring in Information Science, he volunteers for Mission 22, a non-profit organization dedicated to veteran suicide prevention and other resiliency programs for veterans. Dr. Georgina Dodge, vice president for diversity & inclusion, served in the U.S. Navy for six years as an electronics technician before beginning her career in higher education. While she seldom tinkers with devices these days, Dr. Dodge applies her knowledge of troubleshooting and systems analysis in her approaches to the complex issues that confront us as a nation grappling with a troubled history. She continues to serve the U.S. military through her membership on the VA Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Minority Veterans and as a member of the Civic Leaders with the Air Force District of Washington.  Dr. Patty Perillo, vice president for student affairs, serves as the program host.

At the conclusion to the program, all attendees are invited to a tented buffet lunch in the Memorial Chapel Garden of Reflection and Remembrance.

The Veterans Day Honor & Remember service is open to the entire University community and we look forward to seeing you there.
